Response to Grand Jury Report
On June 10 June 10, 2016, the Alameda County Grand Jury issued 2015-2016 Grand Jury Final Report – The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and Charter Schools. The Grand Jury made four (4) findings and eight (8) recommendations based upon their identified concerns and investigation. Please download OUSD's response to the Grand Jury Report below.
ACLU released a report/study highlighting the alleged violations of some charter schools illegally restricting enrollment. Below, find a chart summarizing the charter schools' responses to the alleged violations.
On August 3rd, 2016, the Senate Education Committee held an informational hearing regarding charter school oversight in California. The committee asked panelists, including Silke Bradford, Director of Quality Diverse Providers, to respond to the following question: "Role of Charter School Authorizers: Are there mechanisms in place to ensure sufficient oversight and accountability?" The mission of the Office of Charter Schools (OCS) is to FIRST; fulfill the obligations of a quality authorizer ensuring high quality schools are the established norm for Oakland's charter schools by protecting their autonomy in exchange for strong accountability and SECOND; act as a vehicle by which charter school lessons have a positive impact on the entire public school system. Through transparent policies and procedures, professional customer service, and collaborative practices, the Office of Charter Schools works in the interest of students and families in Oakland, who deserve a high quality, free, public education.
